How to Use the Bergen County Inmate Lookup
The Bergen County Sheriff's Office runs an online inmate lookup for people held at the county jail. A name search is the usual way in, and an identifier search narrows common names. The Sheriff's bail page tells people to confirm custody through the jail Records Unit at 201-336-7903 before posting a bond, so a phone check backs up the online tool.
The Sheriff's Office links the lookup from its main site.

Open the Bergen Sheriff inmate lookup to begin, then follow these steps:
- Open the inmate lookup portal from the Sheriff's site.
- Search by last name, or add a first name to narrow the list.
- Add a date of birth or identifier for common names.
- Review the matching record for custody status.
- Call the jail Records Unit at 201-336-7903 to confirm before posting bail.
Bergen County Jail Facilities
The main jail is the Bergen County Corrections and Rehabilitation Center at 160 South River Street in Hackensack. It holds 1,150 beds and more than 280 correction officers, and it serves as the central reception and processing center for adult pretrial inmates. A 65-bed Community Release Center houses men in work and community-release programs, and a secure medical unit operates at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus.
The jail's main information page covers the facility and its contacts.

See the Corrections and Rehabilitation Center page for the full overview. Directions to the jail are posted separately.

The jail directions page gives routes from Route 17, the Turnpike, and Route 4.
Bergen County Jail Roster Search Fields
The lookup asks for a name or an identifier. Public references point to the fields below, though automated inspection of the live portal was blocked, so confirm the exact layout on the official site before you rely on it.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes / Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search by Name | Tab / section | No | Name-based search path. |
| First Name | Text | No | Narrows a name search. |
| Last Name | Text | Conditional | Main name field. |
| Date of Birth | Date | No | Helps with common names. |
| Unique Identifier | Dropdown | No | Booking or permanent number style identifiers. |
| Search | Button | Yes | Runs the lookup. |
The official URL exists, but the Sheriff's portal blocks automated tools, so treat the field list as a guide and verify it live.
What a Bergen County Inmate Profile Shows
A roster result usually returns the basics needed to confirm custody and a court date. The exact fields depend on what the Sheriff makes public. The inventory below lists the fields to expect; do not assume a mugshot is shown, since that could not be confirmed from official sources.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Name | The inmate's name and any aliases. |
| Booking Number | The jail's identifier for the custody event. |
| Date of Birth / Age | Used to confirm identity. |
| Booking Date | When the person entered custody. |
| Charges | The statutes or offenses on the booking. |
| Bail / Bond | Amount set, where public. |
| Court Date | The next scheduled appearance. |
For the charges and the case behind a booking, cross-check the arrest records and court records pages.
Why a New Arrest May Not Appear
A blank result does not always mean the person is free. Booking takes time, so a very recent arrest may not be entered yet. The person may sit in a municipal or police lockup, not the county jail. They may have moved to state prison, federal custody, or release. A name spelling can also block a match.
When the lookup shows nothing, call the jail Records Unit at 201-336-7903 to confirm. If the person is in state or federal custody, the alternatives further down this page are the right tools.
Booking and Classification
Intake at the Bergen jail follows a set routine. Staff check identity, run medical and mental-health screening, inventory property, and take a booking photo and fingerprints where required. Classification then assigns housing. The jail runs on a direct-supervision model, with officers stationed inside barrier-free housing units to reduce violence and improve oversight.
The 2023 PREA audit describes 28 housing units and classification categories that include close custody, high security, special housing, drug rehab, work crew, trusty, mental health, medical, and general population. The jail's Prisoner Transport Unit moves inmates to the Justice Center for court dates, and it notes the jail holds more than 9,000 inmates over a year.
Bail and Release at the Bergen County Jail
Bail rules at the jail are strict. Confirm custody first through the Records Unit at 201-336-7903. A cash bond can be posted with cash or cashier's checks only; no personal checks or credit cards are accepted. Cashier's checks must be payable to the Office of the Bergen County Sheriff. Surety bonds go through bonding companies, and the Sheriff does not take part in that private contract.
Bond payments and refunds run through the Bergen County Superior Court Finance Division at the Justice Center, phone 201-221-0700 ext. 25150. See released inmates for what happens after release.
Medical and Mental Health Units
Every inmate gets intake screening, and the jail runs broad health services. The Medical Infirmary houses people who need direct medical or psychiatric nursing care. The Mental Health Unit offers on-site services seven days a week, with 24/7 psychiatric on-call coverage and screening for every inmate. The Sheriff reports about 200 inmates identified as having significant mental-health issues. A drug rehabilitation program has run inside the jail since 1995.
More on capacity and programs is on the jail population page.
Federal Detainees in the Bergen Jail
The Bergen County Jail has held federal detainees under a standing U.S. Marshals contract since 2001. A federal pretrial detainee may sit at the county jail, but sentenced federal custody is tracked by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, not the county. So a person held for a federal matter may show in the county lookup while pretrial, then move to a federal facility later.
Sheriff Records Bureau and Reports
The Sheriff's Office handles more than custody. Its Records Bureau processes OPRA requests, accident reports, and other agency records. The bureau is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., not counting holidays. Accident reports are usually ready 5 to 7 business days after the incident, and the office asks people to call 201-336-3500 ext. 4380 before pickup to confirm a report is ready.
The Sheriff's main site is the gateway to these records.

Start at the Bergen County Sheriff's Office home page, and see public records for the broader OPRA request process.
Bergen County Jail Visitation Hours
Visits at the jail are non-contact and must be scheduled in advance. A visitor requests a visit through the Sheriff's scheduling system and gets an approval or denial by email. No more than two adult visitors may attend at one time. Professional visits for attorneys and others run on a wider schedule. The table below summarizes the visit windows.
| Visit Type | Hours | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Public visits | 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. | Scheduled with 24-hour notice; minimum 15 minutes; up to 2 adults. |
| Attorney visits | 8:00 a.m. - 9:30 p.m., 7 days | Proper ID and Tour Commander approval; soft-sided folders only. |
| Interpreters / clergy | 8:00 a.m. - 9:30 p.m., 7 days | Proper ID; same contraband and locker rules. |
| Medical / social professionals | 8:00 a.m. - 9:30 p.m., 7 days | Professional ID; secure prohibited items in lockers. |
Cell phones, keys, tobacco, money, and similar items must be left in lockers, and concealed prohibited items can lead to fines or charges.
Mail, Money, and Phone
Inmate mail goes to Bergen County Jail, P.O. Box 0369, Hackensack, N.J. 07601-0369. All correspondence is inspected for safety. Magazines, newspapers, and books are accepted only when shipped directly from the publisher. The jail bars content that incites violence, describes escape or lock-picking, uses coded writing, or is sexually explicit under its rules.
Families can add phone and account funds through the jail's vendors. A collect-call line for family and friends is 1-888-949-3303, and the facility site number is 17. Money can be deposited at the front reception machine or through approved retail and online channels after an account is opened. Current vendor prices were not published in the official text, so confirm rates before you send funds.
State and Federal Inmate Alternatives
When a person is not in the county jail, three tools cover state and federal custody. The New Jersey Department of Corrections offender search covers state-sentenced prisoners. The Federal Bureau of Prisons locator covers federal inmates from 1982 forward. VINELink offers custody-status notifications.
The NJDOC search defines its fields and result data in an official help page.

See the NJDOC offender search help page for state custody. For federal custody, use the BOP locator.

The BOP Inmate Locator covers federal inmates and release dates. For release notifications and more detail, see released inmates.
